Note: this post is from my other blog, this was published on October 27th, 2005.
I took English 4 (Literature) last summer, i wasn’t really a big fan of Shakespeare’s sonnet..mostly because..i don’t understand what the heck he is saying! We were asked to do individual reports. Our teacher assigned us different sonnets to discuss and explain every single line of it. I was assigned to do "Sonnet 18" (see below)
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm’d;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature’s changing course untrimm’d;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this and this gives life to thee
the first time i’ve read it..i was like " unsa mani oi sobra ka laglom!!"..the day of my report..i came to class unprepared! The time I was called on to do the report..i just stood in front of the class..inventing the meaning of the sonnet…hehe..ulaw au!
Thanks to my teacher, she backed me up and got me out of that total nightmare!
Do you know what the sonnet means? hehe..just try! if dili jud makaya..you can visit thist site! :p
Sa una ra unta ni nako nakit an nga site para wala ko naulawan! hahaay!!
